Wax Cold

Then shall they deliver you up to be afflicted, and shall kill you: and ye shall be hated of all nations for my name’s sake. And then shall many be offended, and shall betray one another, and shall hate one another. And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many. And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold. But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved. (Matthew 24:9-13)

Let’s look at what went on in the 1st century.

Albert Barnes, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church Philadelphia, 1837

“They shall deliver you up to councils” (Mark). To the great council, or Sanhedrin – for this is the word in the original. See the notes at Mat_5:22. This was fulfilled when Peter and John were brought before the council, Act_4:5-7. Mark further adds Mar_13:9 that they should be delivered to synagogues and to prisons to be beaten, and should be brought before rulers and kings for his name’s sake. All this was remarkably fulfilled. Peter and John were imprisoned Act_4:3; Paul and Silas were imprisoned Act_16:24, and also beaten Act_16:23; Paul was brought before Gallic Act_18:12, before Felix Act_24:24, and before Agrippa Act_25:23.”  (Albert Barnes)

“Then shall they deliver you up to affliction – As if ye were the cause of all these evils. And ye shall he hated of all nations – Even of those who tolerate all other sects and parties; but in no nation will the children of the devil tolerate the children of God. Mat_10:17.” (John Wesley)

Matthew 24:11 is a very good place to place the “falling away.”

Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition; (2 Thess 2:3)

Which leaves the man of sin! (I will do a separate post one day on 2 Thess 2 or for Matt 24:15)

Evidences of a “falling away” in the 1st century:

I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel: Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ. (Gal 1:6-7)

And their word will eat as doth a canker: of whom is Hymenaeus and Philetus; Who concerning the truth have erred, saying that the resurrection is past already; and overthrow the faith of some. (2 Tim 2:16-17)

Nevertheless I have somewhat against thee, because thou hast left thy first love. Remember therefore from whence thou art fallen, and repent, and do the first works; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will remove thy candlestick out of his place, except thou repent. (Rev 2:4-5)

Remember therefore how thou hast received and heard, and hold fast, and repent. If therefore thou shalt not watch, I will come on thee as a thief, and thou shalt not know what hour I will come upon thee. (Rev 3:3)

I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot. So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth. (Rev 3:15-16)

Albert Barnes, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church Philadelphia, 1837

“Many men pretending to be prophets or foretellers of future events. This refers not to the false “Messiahs” of which he had spoken Mat_24:5, but to prophets who should appear during the siege of the city. Of them Josephus says: “The tyrannical zealots who ruled the city suborned “many false prophets” to declare that aid would be given to the people from heaven. This was done to prevent them from attempting to desert, and to inspire confidence in God.” – “Jewish Wars,” b. 6 chapter 5, section 2, 3.” (Albert Barnes)

  1. Nice work. On a side note (sort of), I noticed something when looking at the Persecution Watch List link. Three out of the top five countries for persecution are ones that the United States has invaded: Iraq (#2), Afghanistan (#4), and Syria (#5). Another one, Libya, is #10 on the list. Hmm…

      1. I wonder where they were on the list prior to 2001 (Afghanistan invasion), 2003 (Iraq invasion), 2011 (Libya invasion), and whenever we started “doing our thing” in Syria. From all accounts I’ve seen, persecution against Christians in Iraq got much worse after the US invaded, an invasion that was, well, popular enough in US Evangelical circles.

Yes, I’m pointing out that many Christians in the US supported an invasion that led to a dramatic increase in persecution against Christians.

      2. I would be interested in seeing you do a post on that. Under Bush, we had a push by American Evangelicals and not to be too political here, but, under Trump (if elected) we could see that same “push” where we may invade more countries. I would be interested to see (since you pointed out) what will take place after we invade.
