The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave unto him, to shew unto his servants things which must shortly come to pass; and he sent and signified it by his angel unto his servant John: (Rev 1:1)
Where do we cap off or find the ending point to the phrase “things which must shortly come to pass”?????
So Aaron and his sons did all things which the LORD commanded by the hand of Moses.(Lev 8:36)
Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen. (Matt 28:20)
If we were to examine both Leviticus and Matthew, we would find out what “things” Aaron did and what we must observe under Christ.
Who was the book of Revelation written to?
John to the seven churches which are in Asia: Grace be unto you, and peace, from him which is, and which was, and which is to come; and from the seven Spirits which are before his throne; (Rev 1:4)
Imagine you are a Christian living in the 1st century and a member of one of the seven churches. When you hear vs 1 & 4, do you actually think everything will be 20 centuries out?
And he said unto me, These sayings are faithful and true: and the Lord God of the holy prophets sent his angel to shew unto his servants the things which must shortly be done. (Rev 22:6)
Behold, I come quickly: blessed is he that keepeth the sayings of the prophecy of this book. (Rev 22:7)
And I John saw these things, and heard them. And when I had heard and seen, I fell down to worship before the feet of the angel which shewed me these things. (Rev 22:8)
And he saith unto me, Seal not the sayings of the prophecy of this book: for the time is at hand. (Rev 22:10)
He which testifieth these things saith, Surely I come quickly. Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus. (Rev 22:20)
If I told you “time is at hand,” would you actually think it is 20 centuries down the road? Would you think some of the “things” apply to now and and some “things” centuries down the road? Where would you determine that? How could you determine that with the information you are given? You can’t! The only thing you could determine if you lived in the 1st century is that “these things must shortly come to pass.” Ok, what things? Read the letter. It has to be all of Revelation. How many people love Charles Spurgeon? Here is his take on Rev 21:1:
Did you ever regret the absence of the burnt-offering, or the red heifer, or any one of the sacrifices and rites of the Jews? Did you ever pine for the feast of tabernacle, or the dedication? No, because, though these were like the old heavens and earth to the Jewish believers, they have passed away, and we now live under the new heavens and a new earth, so far as the dispensation of divine teaching is concerned. The substance is come, and the shadow has gone: and we do not remember it (Charles Spurgeon on Rev 21:1. Metropolitan Tabernacle Pulpit, vol. xxxvii, p. 354).
How many love Johnathan Edwards?
Not him. LOL
Heaven and earth began to shake, in order to a dissolution, according to the prophecy of Haggai, before Christ came, that so only those things that cannot be shaken may remain, i.e. that those things that are come to an end may come to an end, and that only those things may remain which are to remain to all eternity. So, in the first place, the carnal ordinances of the Jewish worship came to an end, to make way for the establishment of that spiritual worship, the worship of the hearts, which is to endure to all eternity. This is one instance of the temporary world’s coming to an end, and the eternal world’s beginning. And then, after that, the outward temple, and the outward city of Jerusalem, came to an end, to give place to the setting up of the spiritual temple and the spiritual city, which are to last to eternity. (Johnathan Edwards)
When you interpret Revelation from a 21st century perspective and dismiss audience relevance, you are only playing head games with yourself.
